A ccording to Saami legend, creation of the world had two stages. First, the earth was formed from body of a reindeer doe. Her bones became mountains, her flesh – the fertile soil, and her heart went into the innermost center, where its heartbeat could be heard for all times. Second, the creator made humans, giving to them all of earth’s bounty. But over time they became greedy and entitled and sneered at the gifts they received without effort. And so they nearly perished because the gods have turned away from them.
However, two last humans were spared – a boy and a girl, and while they slept on the holy mountain of Passevaari, the creator made a new earth. This time, he hid most of its treasures deep underground: gold, silver, precious gems and minerals. Only some food remained above ground. New people had to wander the earth and toil to discover and obtain its buried gifts, which now rested closer to the heart of the holy reindeer doe.
Algu (Saami for ‘beginning’ or ‘creation’) ring is an homage to the creation myth of the Northern people of Europe. Two Alexandrites with their fascinating colour changing ability represent the peculiar nature of humans and their two ages. Yellow gold suggests the body of the holy reindeer and the precious gems – the treasures hidden near her heart.

T he world was created when Odin and his brothers slew the primeval Frost-Giant Ymir, and it will come to an end when the Giants rise against Odin and his comrades and kill them in battle. Certain doom awaits the gods and men alike, but in the face of that doom the one noble activity is war, and to die courageously fighting was the only way to enter Valhalla, the warrior's paradise. Love in the Norse tales was often accompanied by murderous passions, and treachery was commonplace. The world here is a hard, cold, bitter place in which to live.
